For the last five years, I have been privileged to run a day program that specializes in providing social enrichment to those living with a dementia related disorder. While everyday for me is an adventure I look forward to, I understand the reality for my family caregivers is far beyond an adventure. For the last year, I have been the facilitator of 2 support groups and continue to see the daily struggles the disease can cause. I have cried alongside the wife who's 50 year old husband no longer remembers life's most memorable details; like where they got married, his first job, or the names of his 2 daughters. I have sat with a client in the hospital ER when her son couldn't leave work in time to meet her there, simply so he knew she had a familiar face nearby. I helped a husband prepare long term care arrangements for his wife when he was told his cancer had returned and had only months to live....He died 7 weeks later. Alzheimer's not only steals the memories of those afflicted, but also breaks the spirit of those caregivers and family members who suffer the collateral damage. As a Champion, I dedicate to continuing to offer compassionate care to those living with the disease and unwavering support to the tireless caregivers putting it all on the line daily in the name of love, honor, & dignity.
