Through the creation of a club in my high school, called Math For The Ages, I developed a program of simple math exercises and activities for the residents in an effort to provide mental stimulation and foster meaningful relationships across generations. Within society there exists a lack of awareness for mental health within the elderly members of our community. Through creating the Math For The Ages club I aided in addressing this prevalent and perturbing issue by involving young members of our community in guiding the patients during sessions and by tackling memory loss symptoms with an unique approach of stimulating brain activities such as math exercises. Throughout the duration of the sessions, approximately three months, we saw measurable improvement in math evaluations and even noticed improvement in social interactions.
I believe that the project was truly instrumental in brightening the days of each resident and spreading the message of dementia awareness throughout the community.
Though, I initially intended to guide the seniors, it was them who guided and taught me. Each resident was unique, possessing stories that were diverse and often shared during our sessions. I have grown to develop personal relationships with each of the seniors and have learned a lot, in the scope of life, from them. From English professors to musicians to engineers, no resident is the same.
Upon embarking on this journey, I knew that my Gold Award Project would entail dedication, hard work, and leadership. Though I had proven myself to be a leader through prior community service and school positions, Math For The Ages was a venture that I had undertaken and grown.
I look forward to applying my leadership skills in leading other students in similarly tackling dementia and memory loss illnesses through the Math For The Ages program. In creating this program, I have gained invaluable experience and knowledge that I am excited to put into action.
In the future, I plan to introduce the project to other senior center and high schools. For this project, I was awarded the highest honor conferred upon Girl Scout: the Gold Award.
